One of the most significant rites for men starting their journey of Hajj or Umrah is wearing the ihram. This Ihram, made up of two unstitched white garments, embodies purity, equality, and humility, reminding pilgrims of their unity before Allah. Below is a clear, step-by-step guide for men to wear the Ihram correctly and enter this sacred state for Hajj or Umrah.
Step 1: Preparing for Ihram
- Perform Ghusl (Purification Bath): Start by performing ghusl, a ritual bath that cleanses the body and prepares you spiritually for the journey ahead. This is a recommended practice as it symbolizes purification before entering the sacred state.
- Trim Nails and Remove Unwanted Hair (Optional): If desired, trim your nails and remove any unwanted body hair. This is an optional step that some choose to do as a form of extra grooming before putting on the ihram, as further grooming is restricted after entering ihram
- Apply a Light Fragrance (Before Wearing Ihram): Men may apply a small amount of unscented fragrance to the body, not on the garments themselves. Once you’re in the state of Ihram, using any fragrance is not permitted.
Step 2: Wearing the Izar (Lower Garment)
- Wrap the Izar Around Your Waist: Begin by taking the first piece of cloth, known as the Izar, and wrap it around your waist. The cloth should extend from your waist down to your ankles
- Secure the Izar for Comfort: Wrap the Izar tightly enough around your waist to keep it secure but loose enough for comfort and mobility. Some pilgrims use a belt or pin for added security, though it’s best to avoid overly complex adjustments to keep it simple
- Tuck and Adjust as Needed: Once wrapped around your waist, tuck the upper edge of the Izar to hold it in place. Adjust it as needed to ensure it stays securely around your waist while allowing ease of movement
Step 3: Putting on the Rida (Upper Garment)
- Drape the Rida Over Your Shoulders: The second piece, called the Rida, is draped over the upper body, covering both shoulders and leaving the chest and back modestly covered.
- Cover Both Shoulders: Place the Rida evenly across your shoulders, letting the ends fall over your chest and back. This garment should be wide enough to cover your torso without restricting movement.
- Idtiba During Tawaf: While performing Tawaf (circling the Kaaba), you may uncover your right shoulder in a tradition called Idtiba. This involves shifting the rida to cover only the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder exposed. After completing Tawaf, cover both shoulders again as usual
Step 4: Wear Simple Footwear
- Choose Open-Toed Sandals: In the state of Ihram, men are required to wear open footwear that leaves the top of the feet and ankles visible. Sandals or flip-flops work well for this purpose.
- Prioritize Comfort: The pilgrimage involves a lot of walking, so select footwear that is comfortable and adheres to the guidelines. Closed shoes and socks are not allowed, as they do not meet the Ihram requirements
Step 5: Entering the State of Ihram
Once dressed in the ihram garments, follow these steps to officially enter the state of ihram:
- Make Your Intention (Niyyah): Facing the direction of the Kaaba, make a silent intention (niyyah) in your heart for either Hajj or Umrah. This intention is essential, marking your formal entry into the sacred state.
- Recite the Talbiyah: After making your intention, chant the Talbiyah to announce your devotion and presence before Allah.
Recite:
“Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaik la shareeka laka labbaik. Innal-hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk, la shareeka lak.”
“Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Surely, all praise, grace, and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.”
- Avoid Prohibited Actions While in Ihram: While in the state of Ihram, men must observe specific restrictions, such as:
- Refraining from applying perfumes or scented products
- Avoiding nail trimming or hair cutting
- Abstaining from marital relations
- Avoiding hunting or harming animals
- Keeping the head uncovered and avoiding any sewn garments
By following these steps, you’ll be fully prepared to wear the Ihram properly and enter this sacred state with humility and devotion for your pilgrimage. May your journey be blessed and filled with peace
